The inaugural issue of The Dirty Goat features the debut of several writers that would become important contributors to future issues of the journal and to Host Publications' catalog of books.

Poetry by Urszula Kozioł, one of Poland's most prominent poets is featured and a collection of her works, Urszula Kozioł Poems was published in 1989. One of Chile's most prominent poets, Enrique Lihn is also included in this issue and a large collection of his works, Figures of Speech, was published in 1999. Writer and artist Alfred Leslie's paintings are featured in this issue and was the beginning of Leslie's long association with Host, which culminated in the publishing of an expanded, archival quality edition of The Hasty Papers in 1999.

An abstract essay on the theory of anti-foundationalism, several eclectic pieces of prose and an excerpt from Consuelo de Castro's Walking Papers are also included in this first issue.
